The Enterprise IT Operations unit is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining reliable, cost-effective, high-performance Enterprise IT supporting services 365 days a year, 24 hours per day.

We deliver enterprise IT services to the campus community, investigate and implement new technologies where appropriate, and provide access to campus enterprise data. The enterprise data security functions are also performed by this team as well as the campus data warehouse support.

The Enterprise IT Operations unit provides enterprise IT infrastructure, email services, data services and business intelligence technologies for UC San Diego. This group supports mission-critical technology for over 60,000 faculty, staff and students.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/CIO of Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (ACT), this position provides leadership and vision for enterprise IT operations at UC San Diego.
• Primary responsibilities include overseeing the operations of the enterprise servers, enterprise e-mail services for faculty and staff, enterprise data services and business intelligence technologies, and an enterprise data center. Specifically:
• Plan and supervise the supporting infrastructure for all enterprise information systems, including, but not limited to, financial, student, advancement, and research administrative information systems.
• Ensure that mission-critical enterprise IT operations are cost effective, and are consistent with agreed upon service levels.
• Collaborate with university executives on key administrative technology initiatives.
• Collaborate with departmental IT service providers on campus to provide enterprise IT services.
• Provide leadership for enterprise information technology operations through strategic planning, systems management, resource acquisition, new technology evaluation, and user consultation.
• Develop and implement IT operational policies and procedures and establish quality control standards.
• Oversee the operations of more than 1,200 large-scale enterprise servers, one z-series Business Class server, zOS/Linux/Windows operating systems, large scale DB2/Oracle/MS SQL databases and applications, 14TB IBM system storage, and an 18TB enterprise data warehouse, 6TB replicated virtual tape, and real-time disk data replication.
• Oversee transition to production and production control.
• Ensure disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities are in place and tested.
• Improve existing services by identifying, evaluating, planning, and deploying new technologies and best practices in core infrastructure and services operations and management; implement improvements to increase operational efficiencies and customer services.
• Oversee the operations of an enterprise data center (365/24/7 operation).
• Manage an annual budget of $18 million and direct 70 full-time employees.

• An advanced degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A thoughtful leader with a collaborative leadership style and can-do attitude.
• 10 years of experience managing enterprise-level large-scale IT operations and services.
• Comprehensive knowledge of zOS/Linux/Windows OS using VMWare or similar technology.
• In-depth knowledge of data management, data warehouse, and Business Intelligence services, preferably DB2 and Cognos.
• Experience overseeing large-scale on premise data center operations with 365/24/7 support.
• Experience providing leadership for enterprise information technology operations through strategic planning, systems management, resource acquisition, new technology evaluation, and user consultation.
• Experience with quality control related to transition to production and production control.
• Broad knowledge of all enterprise IT services and applications.
• Experience managing a multimillion dollar budget and negotiating IT services and contracts with vendors.
• Experience in developing and implementing IT policies and operational procedures.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presenting complex technical topics to large non-technical audience.

• Must be able to work on-call nights and weekends as job requires.
• Must be willing to work a non-standard work week in response to Data Center requirements.
